October 2014 News

Dear Quilting Friends,

We are in the midst of Autumn Splendor Quilt Shop Hop 2014.  It started Tuesday, September 23 and runs through Sunday, October 5.  You still have time to come join the fun and be eligible for the prizes.  The foliage is glorious!  We have enjoyed visiting with hoppers from Georgia, Canada, Massachusetts, New York, Pennsylvania, New Hampshire and all parts of Maine!  We are hoping the vivid reds, oranges and golds of our award-winning fall foliage inspires you to create a special quilt as a reminder of your leaf peeping trek through the mountains.

October 1st thru 4th, 9 AM ~ 5PM
OPEN Sunday, October 5th, 11AM ~ 4PM

CLOSED Monday, October 6
October 7th thru 11th, 10AM ~ 4PM

We will then resume our regular hours of Tuesday thru Saturday, 10AM ~ 4PM.

We are also gearing up for our Fourteenth Annual Fall Quilt Camp.  Fourteen years!!!  We can hardly believe it!  Numerous quilters have attended throughout the years, with many returning year after year.  We look forward to renewing old friendships  and welcoming this year's newest campers.  “LIKE” us on Facebook for Quilt Camp postings and pictures.

The venue for our first SPRING Quilt Camp is the  historic and charming Rangeley Inn in “downtown” Rangeley.  April 29th through May 3rd, 2015 are the dates.  Our teachers,  both Certified Studio 180 Design Instructors and award winning quilters, are Dan Perkins and Michelle Hiatt. Multiple projects will be offered ~ campers may choose to focus on one quilt or become familiar with the methods and techniques of several projects. The choice is yours!

Our Spring Quilt Camp Package includes all instruction, lodging, meals and snacks.  We ARE currently accepting registrations and deposits and hope you will consider joining us for this wonderful event!

Our Open Studio dates for the remainder of the year are:
Monday, October 6
Monday November 17
Monday, December 8 ~ with our annual Holiday Pot-Luck lunch!

Our free quilt pattern for the Autumn Splendor Quilt Shop Hop, “Autumn Breeze” is an original pattern designed and written by us, Carol & Dan.  For those of you that are not “hoppers”, the pattern is available for purchase on our webpage or here in the shop.  We wrote the pattern to utilize Studio 180 Design’s V-Block Tool, one of our favorite Deb Tucker tools.

Designing and writing patterns that are accurate and understandable is a process that is not for wimps!  We are learning to break down the steps for smoother transition from idea to pattern.  Steps include but are not limited to the following:

  •  Design is done on graph paper or in EQ7
  •  Fabric requirements are roughly determined.
  •  Quilt top gets pieced.  Every step is written down ~  fabric cuts, steps, pressing  etc.
  • Estimated fabric requirements are compared with actual amount of fabric cut and yardage adjustments are made accordingly.
  • Math is checked.  And re-checked.  And checked again.
  • Pattern writing begins which includes both the creation of graphics and text. This process can take much longer than piecing the quilt!

Considering the efforts involved in creating an accurate pattern for you to enjoy, we urge you to purchase your own pattern and not copy a friends.

Hoffman Fabrics ~ New batiks in very tropical prints including Reef, Seamist, Lagoon....sounds like vacation time to me!

Moda FabricsOne for You, One for Me by Pat Sloan ~ Pat’s favorite flower, the Coneflower, in beautiful corals, blues and greens.

Deb and her team have been busy!!  We have several new Studio 180 Patterns in the shop ~

Pop Luck ~ uses Deb’s Corner Pop tool to create brightly accented pops of color.
Take Two ~ you’ll use two blocks, two tools (Tucker Trimmer 1 and Wing Clipper 1), and two units to make this eye-catching quilt that Deb designed for author Marie Bostwick’s 2014 book “Apart at the Seams”.
Wish Upon ~ scrappy or with a coordinated grouping of colors, this is a spectacular quilt that can be made in two sizes.  Uses the Tucker Trimmer 1Wing Clipper 1 and Split Rects.
Marrakesh ~ the Tucker Trimmer 1 and Wing Clipper 1 are the tools used for construction of the 82” x 97” quilt.

YouTube video tutorials of Deb demonstrating her tools and offering tips to improve your piecing can be viewed here!

Enjoy the beauty of the autumn season ~ in your travels and in your quilts.
